How to stop porn urges: the 10-minute rule

Updated June 2026 · written by the anonymous guy doing it, not a clinic

You don't beat an urge by arguing with it — you outlast it. Almost every urge peaks and starts fading within about 10 minutes, so the whole game is getting through that window without negotiating. Stand up, leave the room you're in, breathe slowly for the first minute, and let a 10-minute timer make the decision for you. You're not fighting forever. You're fighting ten minutes.

How to tell this is you

What's actually happening

An urge feels permanent from the inside, but it's a wave — it rises, peaks, and falls whether you act on it or not. I didn't believe that until I timed one. What keeps the wave growing is engagement: arguing with it, picturing it, negotiating with it. What kills it is time plus distance from the trigger. That's why every step below is physical, not mental — you can't out-think an urge, but you can outlast and out-position it.

The move

  1. Stand up. The urge lives in the position you're in. Break the posture first — it's the fastest signal you're not doing this.
  2. Leave the room. Different room, different light, ideally leave the phone behind. Distance from the trigger is half the fight.
  3. Start the timer. Ten minutes, breathing slow for the first one. The timer decides, not you. When it ends, the wave has usually passed.

One line to remember: This is a wave. Not a decision.

Do this in the next two minutes

If the urge is happening as you read this, do these three things before you finish the page:

What if the urge comes back an hour later?

It often does, and that's not failure — it's a second wave, not the same one. Run the same protocol again. Waves get smaller and further apart with every one you ride out; that's the actual rewiring happening, one outlasted urge at a time.
